Cameroon: Bomb Explodes, Kills Five On Eve Of National Day Celebrations.

By Gilbert Aman – Monday May 20, 2019.

Victims at the scene of an explosion in Maroua, Cameroon.

At least five persons have died and over 25 severely injured from a bomb explosion in the town of Maroua, in Cameroon’s Far North Region, Sunday May 19 2019 at about 9 pm.  Authorities told National Telegraph the explosion took place at a place known as Pong Vert.

Sources told National Telegraph the explosion killed one person on the spot and over four others died later in the hospital, adding that over 25 badly wounded victims are currently being hospitalized at the the emergency unit of the Maroua Regional Hospital.

No group or individuals have claimed responsibility but many have linked it to several calls from Cameroonians at home and in the diaspora for the boycott of National Day commemoration 2019, to demonstrate their discontentment with the worsening sociopolitical and Security atmosphere in Cameroon.

The Far North Region has also been a center of repeated attacks and armed confrontations lately between the Cameroonian army and members of the Boko Haram. The Boko Haram group is said to have multiplied successful attacks in the region, as the army in Cameroon is now focused on the conflict with Restoration Fighters in the former British Southern Cameroon.

Last week a similar attack in Chakamari in the same region, left over four persons dead and properties destroyed. The attack was immediately followed by another in Dama and Dzamadan.
