A top University Don in Cameroon’s North West Region has tasted a bad meal from a group of unidentified gunmen.
Prof Anagho Solomon of the Department of Petro-chemical Engineering at the University of Bamenda was kidnapped about 4 pm Thursday May, 30, 2019, a source has told National Telegraph.
Reports say he was kidnapped at his Ntahkah residence in Mankon, Bamenda as he was returning from town after running some around, making arrangements for the funeral program of his elder brother who just died.
He was released after his wife and family paid a sum of two million (2.000.000) F CFA as ransom for his release, our source said, adding that he returned home late Sunday June 2019.
No group has claimed responsibility nor has the reason why he was picked up has been announced. Insecurity has heightened in Cameroon’s two English-speaking regions since the beginning of a crisis in 016.
Many kidnappings have been reported in the past with accusing fingers pointed at both Pro-Independence fighters and the regular army. The unrest began in October 2016 as a disagreement in language but government mismanaged it.
Failure by government to resolve the crisis amicably turned it into an armed conflict with a demand by majority of Anglophones in the North West and South West for a separate state called Ambazonia.
