An inmate of the Mamfe Principal Prison, a high-security detention facility in Cameroon’s South West has escaped.
Ekwen Divine escaped after climbing up the prison stockade, Monday, April 20, 2020, National Telegraph can confirm.
At least three gunshots were heard at around the same time of the incident but no source has been able to confirm if they were fired at the escapee.
Ekwen, a native of Okoyong, a neighbouring town to Mamfe was transferred from Buea Central Prison, another detention facility in the country’s South West.
Authorities moved him from Buea more than five years ago and he was being held at the Mamfe prison for multiple offences, including aggravated theft.

A prison contact has now told National Telegraph that Ekwen escaped after realizing he will not be benefiting from the president’s magnanimity.
