Oprah Winfrey Congratulates South Africa’s Zozibini Crowned Miss Universe 2019.

By Beltha Mokube – Washington DC, USA – Monday, December 9, 2019.

Zozibini Tunzi – Miss Universe 2019.

Oprah Winfrey, American media guru, actress, talk show host, television producer, and philanthropist has congratulated the 26-year-old new Miss Universe.

Zozibini Tunzi from Tsolo, South African, a model and beauty pageant was crowned Miss Universe 2019 after beating more than 90 women from the globe in the United States state of Georgia, precisely in Atlanta, Sunday, December 8, 2019.

Congratulations Miss South Africa, the new Miss Universe @zozitunzi! Agree with you…leadership is the most powerful thing we should be teaching young women today. We welcome your visit to #OWLAG, our Leadership Academy for Girls, Oprah said in a Tweet, December 8.

Zozibini took the tiara after beating Puerto Rico’s Madison Anderson and Mexico’s Sofia Aragon in the final three. Just crowned Miss South Africa in August 2019, she is the third woman from South Africa to win the title, and the first black woman since Leila Lopes of Angola was crowned Miss Universe in 2011.

 Tonight a door was opened and I could not be more grateful to have been the one to have walked through it. May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine. I proudly state my name Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe 2019!, Zozibini said in an Instagram post.

In the competition with questions ranging from climate change, protest and social media, Zozibini replying to the kind of teaching she would give young girls today;

“It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time – not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labeled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings on the world, and that we should be given every opportunity. And that is what we should be teaching these young girls – to take up space.”

Many took to social media to congratulate her especially for staying natural to her skin colour. A dark skin black woman with short natural hair won not only miss SA but miss universe. The importance of that is not lost on me at all, one of the posts reads.

A year’s stay rent-free apartment in New York, a salary estimated at some $100,000 (£76,000), trips around the world for media and modelling opportunities are among the things in Zozibini’s Miss Universe package.
