Pope Francis Picks Michael Bibi As New Buea Bishop.

Michael Miabesue Bibi is the new Bishop of Buea, a Roman Catholic See in Cameroon’s South West Region, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, Pope Francis announced, Tuesday January 5, 2021, at 12PM Vatican/Cameroon Time.

According to a Papal Bull of Appointment read by Mgr. Andrew Nkea, Archbishop of Bamenda, a Catholic Bishopric in the country’s North West Region, who also doubles as the Apostolic Administrator of Mamfe, another Catholic Bishopric in the South West, Mgr. Michael Bibi will administer the same Diocese he was Apostolic Administrator since 2019.

Several religious who converged on Regina Pacis Cathedral, Small Soppo, Buea where the Papal Bull was read told National Telegraph the Holy Father’s choice reflects the aspirations of most ecclesiastics and diocesan congregants.

Michael Miabesue Bibi was born on July 28, 1971 in Bamessing, in Ngoketunjia Division in the Archdiocese of Bamenda in Cameroon’s North West Region.

He studied Philosophy and Theology at the St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary of Bambui and on April 26, 2000, he was ordained priest and incardinated for the Archdiocese of Bamenda.


From 2000-2001, he served as Assistant priest at St. Jude, in Fundong in Boyo Division in the country’s North West. From 2001-2003, he was Assistant priest at St. Matthias, in Widikum, Momo Division amd Assistant priest at St. Joseph, in Mankon, Bamenda from 2003-2004.

Mgr. Michael Bibi later enrolled in the Maryvale Institute in Birmingham, England where he studied for a Masters in Theology, with a specialization in catechetics from 2004-2006.    

After his studies, from 2006-2008 he oversaw the Parish Ministry at the St. Joseph Parish, in Bafut and All Saints’ Parish and from 2006-2007, he was Chaplain of the Sacred Heart College in Mankon before moving to St. Paul College of Nkwen where he served as Chaplain from 2007-2008.

Mgr. Michael Bibi also served from 2009-2011 as Assistant Archdiocesan Financial Secretary and diocesan Chancellor for Bamenda and from 2012-2015, Special Assistant to the Archbishop.

He again served as Secretary-Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Bamenda from 2015 until Tuesday January 24, 2017, when he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Bamenda assigning him the titular see of Amudarsa.

Msgr. Michael Bibi, Auxiliary Bishop of Bamenda was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Buea Diocese, Saturday December 28, 2019, following the resignation of Mgr. Immanuel Bushu as Bishop of Buea.
