Law enforcement agents in Douala, capital of Cameroon’s Littoral Region said, Thursday July 23, 2020, three men were being detained in relation to the death of a gendarme.
The gendarme was killed in Douala, early Thursday by a man guarding a toilet and collecting payments for usage at FINEX, a travel agency in the city, security sources confirmed to National Telegraph.
The victim was hit with a plank to death after a fierce argument with the guard over the mode of paying the toilet bills.
Sources say the officer was asked to pay 100 F CFA (less than 25 cent) toilet fee, a routine amount for those who use toilets in public places to relieve themselves.
Jean Ateba who witnessed the incident told National Telegraph the gendarme pleaded with the guard he did not have change on him.
“This generated to a fight that claimed the life of the gendarme who was about traveling back to Yaoundé from a mission in Douala, Jean said but did not specify the mission.
Meantime, the toilet keeper has been arrested alongside the Manager of the Agency and one other person yet to be identified.
The trio is detained at the Gendarmerie Legion Office in Bonanjo, a security base in Douala I Sub-division.
Regional authorities say the toilet has been sealed and investigations opened.
